Two Vermont teens are being charged with a hate crime and face up to five years in prison for allegedly spray painting antigay slogans on and slashing the tires of a pair of vehicles belonging to two men joined in a civil union.

A Vermont court has ordered a woman to pay her lesbian former partner $240 a month in child support - in a case of two states with differing legal views on same-sex relationships. The ruling comes amid a continuing custody battle between Janet Jenkins and Lisa Miller over their 4-year-old daughter.

Vermont Supreme Court Claims Jurisdiction Over Lesbians' Custody Battle

The Vermont Supreme Court ruled Friday that its courts, and not those in Virginia, have exclusive jurisdiction over a case involving two lesbians battling for custody of a child they had while they were in a relationship. Justice John Dooley wrote in the opinion that Vermont civil union laws govern the women's 2003 separation and subsequent child custody disagreement because they were legally joined in a civil union there in 2000.

Vermont Governor's Veto Puts State Behind Public on Non-Discrimination

Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese has denounced Vermont Gov. James Douglas' veto of a bill prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity or expression. The bill, approved by the Vermont Legislature, would have made the state the ninth in the nation to prohibit anti-transgender discrimination.

Openly gay Vermont State Senator Edward Flanagan is in serious condition after his car ran off the road amid treacherous weather conditions Friday. Flanagan, a Democrat, drove off Interstate 89 and down an embankment in Burlington early Friday morning where his car overturned, police officials said. The car was not discovered for several hours.

Vermont Marks 5 Years Of Civil Unions

This week marked the fifth anniversary of the landmark ruling by the Vermont Supreme Court ordering the legislature "to assign to same-sex couples the common benefits and protections that flow from marriage under Vermont law." The ruling led to the creation of "civil unions", making Vermont the first state in the country to formally recognize same-sex relationships.

Bill Would Let Vermont Gays Marry

A bill to legalize same-sex marriage was introduced in the Vermont legislature on Friday. Along with full marriage rights, the legislation would allow people who have had civil unions to transfer them to marriage by filling out a simple form. The bill would also require the state to recognize same-sex marriages and civil unions conducted in other states and countries.
